Relationship between an authentic learning community experience and altruism

Three types of adult behavior were used as indicators of adult altruistic involvement in society: donating to nonprofits, volunteering, and voting. Does the experience of being educated in an authentic educational community relate to all three of these adult behaviors? It turns out that voting is not related to experiencing college community, but both donating and volunteering are. Indeed, as shown in figure 6.8, those who experienced an authentic educational community had a 56% higher probability of contributing a larger percentage of their income. More specifically, those with a closer relationship with faculty or had a mentor or were more involved on campus had a 38–62% greater likelihood of donating a larger percentage of their income.
